New Delhi, May 9: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Friday, with the dialogue focused primarily on strengthening cooperation against terrorism.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar said, “Had a phone call with UK Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy this afternoon. Our discussions centered around countering terrorism, for which there must be zero tolerance.”
The call took place amid heightened tensions in the region following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22 that resulted in 26 fatalities and left many others injured.
In response to the attack, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, conducting precision strikes on nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation, executed between 1:05 am and 1:30 am, involved coordinated efforts by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Key targets included bases of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
On the intervening night of May 8 and 9, the Indian Army successfully thwarted multiple drone attacks and ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces along the western border and the Line of Control (LoC). The Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) confirmed via X that all aerial threats were neutralised and retaliatory actions were taken as part of Operation Sindoor.
“Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire Western Border on the intervening night of 08 and 09 May 2025,” the Indian Army stated. “Pak troops also resorted to numerous ceasefire violations (CFVs) along the LoC. The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and a befitting reply was given to the CFVs. Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation. All nefarious designs will be responded to with force.”
Additionally, sources reported that over 50 Pakistani drones were shot down during a major counter-drone operation carried out earlier along the LoC and International Borders (IB), following an attempted swarm drone incursion by Pakistan.
