Jerusalem breaks away from Washington - Tehran pact
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir flatly rejected the newly completed Washington-brokered peace accord with Tehran, stating his country will not honor external diplomatic understandings. The far-right politician emphasised that American actions do not dictate domestic military planning. This open defiance isolates US President Donald Trump hours after he declared a formal conclusion to negotiations with the Islamic Republic.
Tensions reached a boiling point following Trump’s announcement on Truth Social, where the American leader ordered the immediate removal of the United States naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz. Trump celebrated the energy breakthrough by urging global shipping vessels to resume oil transport. However, Israeli leadership views the sudden shift as a catastrophic gamble that leaves them exposed to regional hostile forces.
Ben-Gvir argued that succumbing to international pressure historically forced Israel to pay a severe price. He referenced past diplomatic frameworks, including the 1993 Oslo Accords and the 2006 Lebanon ceasefire, as structural failures that ultimately compromised local defense. Analysts note that Israel's fierce pushback reflects a deep-seated fear of any deal that lifts sanctions without completely dismantling proxy networks across its borders.
Opposition leader Benny Gantz echoed this domestic resistance, calling the emerging deal a strategic disaster. Both factions insist that military forces must retain absolute operational freedom in southern Lebanon to push back Hezbollah fighters. Ben-Gvir warned that any future drone or missile deployment originating from Lebanese territory will trigger immediate retaliatory strikes inside Beirut.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif initially leaked news of the breakthrough just before Washington confirmed the end of maritime restrictions. Israeli officials maintain they will operate as a sovereign power, refusing to withdraw from captured territories or lower their guard despite intense pressure from their closest Western ally.
