Iran battles back twice for World Cup point
Iran recovered from a goal down twice to salvage a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in an action-packed Group G opening fixture on Monday. This crucial football encounter unfolded at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, matching the intense action on the pitch with a highly charged atmosphere in the stands.
New Zealand initiated the scoring in the seventh minute when Chris Wood assisted Elijah Just, who volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Iran reacted positively and found an equaliser in the 32nd minute. Defender Ramin Rezaeian reacted quickest in the six-yard box to poke the ball into the net, sparking celebrations among the large contingent of Iranian supporters.
Los Angeles hosts the largest Iranian diaspora outside Iran, which turned this sporting event into a significant focal point for local political expressions and anti-government demonstrations. Outside the arena, hundreds of demonstrators gathered with banners, while inside, sections of the crowd voiced opposition during the national anthem.
The Kiwis reclaimed their advantage early in the second half. Elijah Just struck again in the 54th minute, neatly lifting the ball over the onrushing keeper following another setup by Chris Wood. Iran refused to back down and levelled the score just ten minutes later when Mohammad Mohebbi directed a firm header into the back post from a precise cross.
Group G Hangs in Balance
Neither side could find a late winner, leaving the group completely level after Belgium and Egypt also drew 1-1 earlier in the day. Iran stays in Los Angeles to prepare for their next match against Belgium on Sunday, while New Zealand flies to Vancouver to confront Egypt.
