IPL 2026: KKR strategy questioned as Badrinath calls out expensive signings

Former player Badrinath critiques KKR’s leadership and expensive player choices

Kolkata Knight Riders are entering the upcoming season under a cloud of skepticism and tactical scrutiny. Former Chennai Super Kings player S Badrinath has publicly voiced his disapproval regarding the team's management decisions. He specifically targeted the franchise's reliance on veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane to lead the side once again, despite a disappointing previous campaign.

Badrinath highlighted the investment in Australian all-rounder Cameron Green as a primary concern. KKR secured Green for a staggering Rs 25.20 crore, a move the former cricketer labels as a product of "hype" rather than consistent performance. Green has struggled significantly with his form during recent international outings, including the T20 World Cup. Badrinath argues that the Australian has yet to prove he can singlehandedly win matches in the league, making his record-breaking price tag hard to justify.

Leadership Concerns under Ajinkya Rahane

Management's choice to retain Rahane as captain has been labeled a major "weak link" for the franchise. After winning the title in 2024, KKR underwent a drastic overhaul, which included moving on from winning captain Shreyas Iyer. However, the subsequent shift to Rahane resulted in a lackluster eighth-place finish last year. Badrinath suggests that sticking with this leadership model is a tactical error, especially as the team looks to bounce back from its recent failures. Beyond leadership and form, the squad is currently battling a wave of availability issues. Key investments are not yielding the expected stability due to physical setbacks. Harshit Rana is already out of the competition, while other significant signings like Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman face serious doubts or confirmed absences. This string of injuries leaves the Kolkata-based team in a precarious position before the first ball is even bowled.
