Indian Navy to Commission its Last Foreign-Built Warship

The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Tamal, its latest multi-role stealth frigate, in a ceremony on July 1 in Kaliningrad, Russia. The induction of this powerful warship is a landmark event, as it will be the last major vessel to be built for the Indian Navy in a foreign shipyard, symbolizing the nation's successful transition from a "Buyer's Navy" to a self-reliant "Builder's Navy."

A Milestone in Self-Reliance

INS Tamal is the eighth and final Krivak-class frigate acquired from Russia over the last two decades. Its commissioning marks the end of an era of reliance on foreign shipyards for major naval platforms. A senior naval officer confirmed that there are no future plans to construct Indian warships abroad. This shift is highlighted by the fact that the Navy currently has 59 warships and vessels under construction in Indian shipyards, with initial approval granted for another 31 indigenous projects. This robust domestic pipeline includes next-generation submarines, frigates, and corvettes, cementing India's position as a major naval manufacturing power.

Advanced Combat Capabilities

The 125-meter-long, 3,900-tonne frigate is a formidable addition to the fleet. It features a sophisticated blend of Indian and Russian technologies, making it a potent platform for various combat scenarios. Its primary armament includes the formidable BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and the Shtil surface-to-air missile system. For anti-submarine warfare, INS Tamal is equipped with advanced torpedoes and rocket systems. The frigate's combat capability is further enhanced by network-centric warfare systems, advanced surveillance radars, and a state-of-the-art electronic warfare suite, allowing it to operate seamlessly in a complex, multi-threat environment.

Strategic Importance in the Indo-Pacific

The commissioning of INS Tamal comes at a crucial time, providing a significant boost to the Navy's strategic reach and firepower in the increasingly contested Indo-Pacific region. The induction is particularly relevant given China's continuous efforts to augment the naval capabilities of regional allies, including Pakistan. Upon its commissioning, INS Tamal will join the Western Fleet, the "Sword Arm" of the Indian Navy, where it will play a key role in safeguarding India's maritime interests and maintaining stability in the region.
