Harjinder Kaur secures weightlifting silver in Glasgow breaking records

Indian weightlifter Harjinder Kaur claimed silver in the women's 69kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Tuesday night. She lifted a personal best total of 227kg to secure her second successive Commonwealth podium finish, having previously won bronze in Birmingham in 2022. Weightlifting has historically been one of India's strongest medal sources at multi-sport events, and this result continues that long-standing tradition.

Harjinder delivered an incredibly consistent performance against tough competition. She broke the Commonwealth Games record twice during the snatch event. Opening with 96kg, she soon lifted 99kg for a new Games mark, then bettered it with 101kg on her final attempt. This incredible effort put intense pressure on her rivals heading into the clean and jerk.

Final lift secures podium finish

During the second phase, she opened with 120kg and briefly took the lead. She finished with a successful 126kg lift. Canada's Charlotte Simoneau eventually won gold with a total lift of 235kg, combining 108kg in snatch and 127kg in clean and jerk. Harjinder's silver medal adds to India's strong overall campaign in Scotland.

India now holds 11 medals, including two gold, six silver, and three bronze. Other medallists feature Mirabai Chanu taking weightlifting gold, and Sharmila Dhankar winning shot put gold. Weightlifting remains highly successful, with talented athletes like Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Valluri Ajaya Babu, and Bindyarani Devi also winning medals. Jhandu Kumar won para powerlifting bronze, while Sarvesh Kushare took high jump silver.
