India Condemns Pakistan's Stance on Civilian Protection at UN Security Council
India delivered a condemnation note of Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council on Friday, May 23rd, during an open debate focused on the protection of civilians in armed conflict. Ambassador Harish Puri, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, labeled Pakistan's participation in such discussions as "an affront to the international community" and "grossly hypocritical," given its alleged long-standing record of sponsoring cross-border terrorism.
Pakistan's Participation Termed 'Affront' by India
Ambassador Puri stated that India has endured decades of "Pakistani-sponsored terrorist attacks across our borders," citing specific incidents like the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the recent barbaric killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam in April 2025. He asserted that "a nation that makes no distinction between terrorists and civilians has no credentials to speak about protecting civilians." He argued that the primary objective of this alleged Pakistan-sponsored terrorism has been to undermine India's prosperity, progress, and morale, with civilians being the predominant victims.
Allegations of Targeting Civilians and Honouring Terrorists
Referring to recent events, Ambassador Puri accused the Pakistani army of deliberately shelling Indian border villages earlier this month, resulting in over 20 civilian deaths and more than 80 injuries. He further alleged intentional targeting of places of worship, including gurdwaras, temples, and convents, as well as medical facilities by Pakistani forces. Puri highlighted instances where senior Pakistani government, police, and military officials reportedly paid respects at the funerals of known terrorists who were targeted during India's recent "Operation Sindoor," further questioning Pakistan's commitment to distinguishing between terrorists and civilians. He also accused Pakistan of repeatedly using civilian cover to advance terrorism.
India's forceful statement at the UN Security Council highlighted its unwavering position on cross-border terrorism and its deep concerns regarding Pakistan's alleged role in perpetuating violence while simultaneously engaging in discussions on civilian protection. New Delhi maintains that Pakistan's actions undermine its credibility on such critical international platforms and continue to pose a significant threat to regional peace and security.
