Canada Suspends US Trade Talks Over Tariffs as Washington Imposes 50% Duties on Canadian Goods

Talks Collapse over Demands

Bilateral negotiations between Washington and Ottawa collapsed late Friday, resulting in severe border duties. Officials in Washington enacted a 50% tariff on almost $28 billion of Canadian goods exactly at 12:01 a.m. ET. Prime Minister Mark Carney quickly recalled his negotiating team, declaring the late-stage American proposals uneconomic and unfair. Canada and US share one of the most integrated supply chains globally, making sudden customs barriers was highly disruptive to North American commerce.

Carney announced that his government will match the financial hit dollar-for-dollar, shielding domestic workers from the $28 billion impact. He emphasised that protecting local businesses remains the ultimate priority, refusing to accept any deal driven merely by deadlines. He noted that America continues altering its international relationships, charging closest allies for market access. Ottawa has poured nearly $25 billion into supporting its industries over the last 18 months, and officials plan further protective measures soon.

Washington blames Ottawa

American representatives presented a very different perspective on the breakdown. United States Trade Representative officials claimed Ottawa walked back previous commitments and introduced fresh demands. They insisted Washington offered significant tariff relief across key sectors like lumber, autos, aluminum, and steel. Furthermore, American negotiators proposed formalising new talks around the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement to enhance supply chain coordination and combat unfair practices. Washington accused its northern neighbour of maintaining prolonged prohibitions on American services.

Shifting Global Export Strategy

Canadian officials are actively redirecting their economic focus to counter these repeated cross-border shocks. Exports to American buyers dropped by 3.7% last year. Meanwhile, Canadian shipments to alternate international markets jumped 11.1%. These alternative buyers currently represent 32.8% of total exports, marking a 40-year high. Leaders emphasize that current free trade frameworks already grant preferential access to 1.5 billion consumers globally. Government strategies involve advancing $500 billion in infrastructure projects while securing status as the second-fastest growing G7 economy. This diversification strategy aims to insulate the domestic economy from future political turbulence.
