Virat Kohli smashes 74 as India defeats New Zealand in Auckland

Virat Kohli and Indian bowlers secure comfortable victory over New Zealand

Virat Kohli delivered an authoritative 74-run knock to guide India to a five-wicket victory over New Zealand on Wednesday. Rain repeatedly interrupted the first ODI of the five-match series in Auckland, forcing officials to revise the target. Indian bowlers had earlier restricted the hosts to 185 runs, setting up a highly manageable chase. Both teams were eager to build early momentum in this bilateral series, making this opening contest crucial. Rohit Sharma departed without scoring in the second over. Shubman Gill then steadied the innings alongside his senior partner. Kohli dominated the chase right from the start, hitting 13 boundaries and one six during his 51-ball stay. He survived an early LBW appeal and quickly reached his half-century in just 36 deliveries. Match officials revised the target twice due to persistent showers, finally settling on 143 runs needed from 32 overs. Gill provided solid support with a rapid 56 off 37 balls before falling to Nathan Smith. Jacob Duffy caused a brief scare by dismissing Kohli and Axar Patel in the same over. KL Rahul and Naman Dhir eventually guided the team safely over the finish line.

He removed openers Will Young and Henry Nicholls early in the innings. Gurnoor Brar picked up three wickets, while Anshul Kamboj secured two dismissals. Tim Seifert managed 38 runs to help stabilize the innings. Glenn Phillips also showed some resistance with a 30-run contribution from 51 deliveries, but he eventually fell to the left-arm pace of Arshdeep. Daryl Mitchell contributed 28 runs before falling victim to a brilliant run-out executed by Rohit Sharma. Blair Tickner launched a late counterattack with 34 runs off 23 balls, but India kept full control of the contest throughout the innings.
