India clinched the T20 series with an explosive run chase
Brilliant batting from openers helped India secure a decisive six-wicket victory over New Zealand during their third T20 international in Wellington on Tuesday. This triumph gives the visiting squad an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match contest, completing the series victory with two games remaining. Chasing a challenging target of 199, the batting lineup unleashed an unprecedented counterattack. The opening pair combined to completely dismantle the host's bowling unit from the very first over. They plundered 26 runs immediately and kept accelerating, racing to an astonishing 118 without losing a single wicket by the end of the six-over fielding restriction. Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played a fearless knock against seasoned international bowlers. He contributed 45 runs off just 19 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and four sixes, before falling to Matthew Fisher in the eighth over. His partner, Abhishek Sharma, was even more destructive. The opener reached his century in merely 35 balls, eventually scoring 113 from 38 deliveries with 11 maximums and nine boundaries to his name.
This explosive performance highlights the growing depth of young batting talent within the national squad, particularly following recent transitions in the top order.
New Zealand set a challenging target
Earlier in the afternoon, Daryl Mitchell anchored the New Zealand innings with a crucial 89 off 52 balls. He found solid support from Finn Allen, who scored 40 from 25 deliveries with five huge hits, and Bevon Jacobs, who added a quickfire 39. Their combined efforts, along with a crucial 75-run partnership for the fourth wicket, propelled the home team to 198 for three.
Defending the total proved impossible for the home side, as every bowler conceded over 12 runs per over. Kyle Jamieson managed to pick up two late wickets, removing the centurion and contributing to a minor collapse towards the end. However, the touring side comfortably crossed the finish line in just 13.2 overs. For the visitors, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy claimed one dismissal each to restrict the scoring rate in the latter half.
