Domestic military aviation takes giant leap during successful test

Private enterprise has officially entered the skies of domestic military manufacturing as the first domestic Airbus C295 transport aircraft successfully completed its maiden test flight. Taking off from the newly established Final Assembly Line in Vadodara, this crucial testing phase signals a major shift in how the nation sources its tactical assets. The successful flight initiates post-production evaluations, ensuring the platform meets rigorous security parameters prior to official service entry.

Delivery of this specific domestic aircraft to the Indian Air Force fleet is scheduled for September. This deal encompasses 56 multi-role transport planes valued at approximately Rs 21,935 crore, aimed at replacing aging infrastructure. While the initial units are arriving directly from Europe, a total of 40 aircraft will be assembled locally by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in collaboration with Airbus. This joint venture incorporates numerous Indian micro, small, and medium enterprises that supply critical components nationwide.

Historically, state-run corporations managed all domestic military flight production. This program breaks that traditional monopoly by positioning a private consortium at the helm of a mainline defense project.

Air force officials verified that this milestone enhances domestic security frameworks while supporting self-reliance initiatives. The dual-engine turboprop is engineered to operate from short or unprepared airstrips, providing specialized logistics support, troop transport, and medical evacuation capabilities across diverse territorial terrains.
