US President Donald Trump schedules early 2027 trip to India

President Donald Trump will travel to India early next year to strengthen bilateral cooperation and seal a major trade agreement. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the upcoming diplomatic mission, noting that he intends to fly to New Delhi later this year to finalise the groundwork. This tour represents the first time Trump will step foot on Indian soil since his February 2020 visit during his initial White House term.

Diplomatic relations have grown significantly since the 1998 Pokhran tests when Washington initially imposed economic sanctions on New Delhi. Decades later, the geopolitical landscape has shifted toward strong strategic alignment.

Negotiators from both capitals are currently sorting through the final details of a significant trade pact. Rubio indicated that the deal is on the verge of completion, describing the current progress as highly encouraging. Beyond commercial ties, the two democracies are actively collaborating on energy security, specifically focusing on India's advanced capacity to refine heavy crude oil.

Personal rapport between the two leaders continues to drive the diplomatic momentum. Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently held talks during the G7 Summit in Evian, France, ending a sixteen-month gap in face-to-face discussions. Rubio praised Modi's leadership style, stating that the Prime Minister has successfully elevated the South Asian nation into a true global power.

Security cooperation remains a core focus for the upcoming state visit. Leaders from both sides are preparing for another gathering of the Quad security partnership to address regional stability. Rubio stated that the bond between the heads of state could not be closer, providing a solid foundation for upcoming policy negotiations.
