New Delhi, July 27: Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest number of ragging complaints in higher educational institutions (HEIs) this year, with 135 cases, followed by West Bengal with 75, according to government data presented in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Replying to a question by MP Sayani Ghosh, Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar said the data, updated till July 22, shows that Madhya Pradesh reported 63 ragging complaints, Maharashtra 53, and Bihar 50.

Other states with significant numbers of complaints include Rajasthan (44), Karnataka (41), Odisha (36), and Delhi (27), the minister informed the House.

Majumdar also said the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued show-cause notices to 107 higher educational institutions, including 18 medical colleges, in 2025 for failing to comply with the mandatory provisions of the UGC Anti-Ragging Regulations, 2009.

The government reiterated that educational institutions are required to strictly implement anti-ragging measures to ensure a safe and secure campus environment for students.
