Bhubaneswar, May 22: Odisha continues to grapple with extreme weather conditions as the state reported multiple deaths from both heatstroke and severe thunderstorms.
Deputy Special Relief Commissioner Padmanabh Behera confirmed three deaths due to sunstroke in Bolangir, Sundargarh, and Subarnapur districts. Officials said the victims collapsed while performing routine outdoor activities, highlighting the growing health risks from the ongoing heatwave.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take precautions, particularly the elderly and outdoor workers. Hospitals across the affected districts have been instructed to keep emergency facilities ready, while district administrations are strengthening awareness campaigns and ensuring immediate medical support for suspected sunstroke cases. Meteorologists noted that temperatures remain above normal, with high humidity adding to discomfort.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms has already hit several parts of the state, even before the official arrival of the monsoon. In a tragic incident in Naranpur village under Town police limits, three people died when a tent collapsed during a thunderstorm. The weather department has warned of more thunderstorms and lightning activity in the coming days and advised residents to stay indoors, avoid shelter under trees, and exercise caution during adverse weather.
