Odisha: Bird Census begins at Chilika Lake and Hirakud Dam to assess Migratory and Resident Birds

Bhubaneswar, January 18: The annual bird census has commenced in Odisha's Chilika Lake and Hirakud Dam, to evaluate the arrival, species diversity, and population of both migratory and resident birds for the current season.

Special teams, consisting of forest officials and bird specialists, have been formed to carry out a thorough and precise count.

At Chilika Lake, 22 teams have been organized, covering five specific ranges: Balugan, Rambha, Tangi, Chilika, and Satapada. Each team is made up of 10 to 12 members, who are closely observing bird activities, particularly in areas like Mangalajodi, using binoculars. Small boats are employed to ensure the birds remain undisturbed.

Experts involved in the census have reported sightings of several new bird species this year. The final count of species and their populations will be determined once the census is concluded.

Similarly, at Hirakud Dam, 32 teams of around 70 participants are surveying 21 sectors, including areas up to the Odisha–Chhattisgarh border. The census involves forest staff, bird enthusiasts, and students, with GPS trackers aiding data collection. Last year, over three lakh migratory birds were recorded here.

The census will provide valuable data to guide future conservation efforts.
