Delhi High Court orders daily medical checks for Sonam Wangchuk

Delhi High Court directed the central government on Thursday to closely monitor the deteriorating health of activist Sonam Wangchuk. Leading an intense protest at Jantar Mantar, Wangchuk entered the nineteenth day of his hunger strike. A judicial bench consisting of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia disposed of a public interest litigation seeking immediate medical protection for the activist.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the bench that government physicians will evaluate Wangchuk on a daily basis. The court asserted that every citizen's life holds immense value, instructing officials to execute medical interventions promptly if conditions worsen. This legal action followed a petition filed by a practicing advocate who claimed the administration showed apathy toward the climate reformer's life-threatening situation.

Wangchuk launched his hunger strike under the banner of the CJP to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The agitation stems from national outrage surrounding the recent NEET-UG question paper leaks. Though the initial petition demanded that authorities hospitalize and force-feed the activist using a liquid diet, the court chose to focus entirely on systematic clinical observation. Government representatives agreed to track all vital signs regularly. The bench emphasized that official doctors must lead these examinations rather than relying solely on private practitioners, ensuring an organized response to any sudden physical decline.
