Indian hockey squad defeats Pakistan during dramatic London opener

Indian men’s hockey players launched their FIH Pro League London leg campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over traditional rivals Pakistan. Tuesday's high-stakes encounter at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre saw the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalists secure their third outright win of the current season. This crucial result elevates India to the seventh spot in the global tournament standings.

Pakistan struck first in the eighth minute when Ahmad Nadeem converted a penalty corner. Though India earned three consecutive short corners late in the first quarter, Pakistan goalkeeper Ali Raza deflected skipper Harmanpreet Singh's dragflick to maintain the early lead.

India altered their strategy in the second period with rapid passing sequences. Forward Abhishek equalized in the 22nd minute, drilling home a rebound after Dilpreet Singh's initial strike was blocked. Minutes later, Nilakanta Sharma capitalised on another rebound during a penalty corner routine, sending the ball past Raza to put India ahead 2-1 before halftime.

Tactical Edge and Local Strength

Odisha defender Amit Rohidas anchored the backline during the third quarter, neutralizing a dangerous two-on-one breakaway led by Nadeem. This defensive resilience is a hallmark of the modern Indian setup, heavily supported by the state government of Odisha, which has served as the primary sponsor and spiritual home of Indian hockey for nearly a decade.

Following that defensive stand, Abhishek assisted Sukhjeet Singh in the 40th minute to widen the gap to 3-1.

Rajinder Singh extended the lead to 4-1 in the 52nd minute via a clever penalty corner variation, using Harmanpreet as a decoy. Pakistan responded immediately through captain Abu Mahmood, who slipped a flick past Indian custodian Suraj Karkera. Moin Shakeel added another for Pakistan with just 14 seconds remaining, but the Indian side kept their composure to seal the match.
