Malkangiri, Sept 26: In response to the heavy rainfall forecasted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the Malkangiri district administration has announced the closure of all schools in the district on Friday. However, District Collector Somesh Kumar Upadhyay has directed teachers to remain present at their respective schools for official duties.
Earlier, the district administration had canceled the leaves of all government employees till September 28. A formal notification issued by the Collector has warned that any deviation from these directives will result in strict disciplinary action.
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to intensify into a depression by September 26. This weather system is predicted to bring heavy rains, strong winds, and adverse weather conditions to Malkangiri and surrounding areas in the coming days.
In light of these predictions and to ensure a prompt response in case of emergencies, the District Collector has taken these precautionary measures to safeguard the public and maintain order.
Malkangiri is not the only district on high alert. A report from the Special Relief Commissioner’s (SRC) office confirmed that all 30 districts in Odisha received approximately 60% more rainfall than normal on Wednesday. The IMD has forecast continued rainfall until September 27, which has prompted the state government to put all districts on alert.
The SRC has instructed district officials to ensure that administrative machinery is prepared for any eventuality, particularly in areas under Orange and Yellow weather warnings.
In the districts of Sambalpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nuapada, and Bolangir, there have been reports of severe waterlogging. Sambalpur, Bolangir, Patnagarh, Nuapada, and other towns have been facing flooding issues, with rainwater entering residential homes. To combat the rising water levels, local authorities have been using pumps to drain excess water from affected areas.
As the weather situation continues to develop, the administration remains on high alert to deal with any emergencies and minimize disruption to normal life.
With the IMD’s forecast of heavy rainfall and potential flooding, Malkangiri district is taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and preparedness of its citizens. Government employees have been instructed to remain on duty, while schools will remain closed to safeguard students during this period of adverse weather.
