Jharkhand HC Quashes FIR Against CM Hemant Soren in Alleged MCC Violation Case

Ranchi, June 25:Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren secured significant legal relief on Thursday after the Jharkhand High Court quashed an FIR registered against him in connection with an alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the 2014 Assembly elections.

With the High Court's ruling, all judicial proceedings related to the case have been brought to an end.

The order was delivered by Justice Anil Kumar Choudhary after hearing detailed arguments from both sides.

The case stemmed from allegations that Soren had violated the Model Code of Conduct during the 2014 Jharkhand Assembly elections. An FIR (Case No. 418/2014) had been lodged against him at the Adityapur police station in Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

Challenging the FIR, Soren had approached the High Court, arguing that the case lacked legal merit and seeking its dismissal. The matter remained pending before the court for several years.

During the proceedings, the High Court had earlier granted an interim stay on the trial court proceedings. Thereafter, regular hearings were conducted on the main petition before the final verdict was delivered.

While allowing the criminal writ petition filed by the Chief Minister, the court examined the documents, records, and legal submissions presented by both the petitioner and the state government.

Appearing on behalf of Soren, his counsel argued that no violation of the Model Code of Conduct had occurred. The defence further contended that the FIR was politically motivated and filed out of vendetta. According to the submission, Soren had only participated in election campaigning for a candidate of his party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and had not committed any act warranting criminal prosecution.

The High Court's decision effectively closes the long-pending case against the Chief Minister.
