Indian Cheesemakers Secure Super Gold at Brazil World Championship Earning PM Modi’s Praise

India clinches four medals at prestigious Brazilian world cheese competition.

Domestic dairy artisans have stunned the international culinary community by securing four medals, including a coveted "Super Gold," at the Mundial do Queijo do Brasil 2026. This performance marks a significant shift in global food hierarchies, where Indian craftsmanship is now competing with traditional European heavyweights. Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly lauded the winners, emphasizing that such victories showcase the rising caliber of India’s niche dairy producers.

Regional Excellence Meets Global Standards

Mumbai-based Eleftheria Cheese led the charge, with its "Gulmarg" Brie-style variety capturing the Super Gold title. This specific recognition is reserved for products that display exceptional texture and flavor profiles. Additionally, the "Brunost" whey cheese from the same maker earned Gold, while the "Kaali Miri" variety took home Silver.

Himalayan Innovation in the Spotlight

Ladakh’s unique dairy heritage received a major boost as Thenlay Nurboo’s Yak Churpi-Soft secured a Gold medal. This achievement is particularly notable as it brings a centuries-old Himalayan preservation technique into the modern fine-dining conversation. Historically, India has been the world's largest milk producer, but its focus is now pivoting from sheer volume to high-value, artisanal exports that appeal to sophisticated global palates.

Government Recognition

Prime Minister Modi took to social media to specifically congratulate Mausam Narang and Thenlay Nurboo. He noted that their success brings much-needed attention to small-scale producers who are refining local traditions for an international audience. This victory at the Brazilian championship, which concluded on April 19, serves as a blueprint for how Indian regional food identities can achieve premium status worldwide.
