India enters elite global club with successful DRDO missile defence interception trials

India secures top tier global status through advanced missile shield

Indian defence scientists have successfully validated a multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence system during high-stakes flight trials. Conducted on June 10 and 11, 2026, these consecutive tests proved that domestic interceptors can destroy incoming targets, including threats scaling up to Intercontinental Ballistic Missile capabilities.

Expanding Maritime Reach

Alongside the shield validation, teams executed the maiden launch of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range. This new weapon directly upgrades the country's naval attack options, allowing maritime forces to neutralize surface threats at extended ranges. Senior military officers and defence scientists monitored the trials, which relied entirely on homegrown technology.

Strengthening Regional Security

Strategic deployment of these interceptors alters the security dynamic in the Indo-Pacific region by creating a reliable shield against synchronized aerial strikes. This technological leap builds upon earlier successes at LC-IV Dhamra off the Odisha coast, a coastal site that remains central to testing India's deep-strike capabilities.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the collaborative effort between state researchers and domestic production partners, noting that self-reliance in this domain guarantees national security preparedness.
