Banking sector faces immediate threat from advanced Mythos AI capabilities.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has directed Indian banking leaders to fortify digital defenses following global alarms regarding Anthropic’s new "Mythos" AI model. During a high-level meeting on Thursday, the Minister cautioned that this technology possesses the unique ability to autonomously detect and exploit deep-seated software vulnerabilities. Government officials, representatives from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and MeitY experts evaluated the potential for these systems to compromise customer data and financial stability.
Threat from Mythos
Anthropic recently classified its Mythos model as too hazardous for general public release. The system allegedly identifies critical flaws in operating systems and browsers that have remained hidden for decades. While the company intended the tool for defensive research under "Project Glasswing," reports of unauthorized access have triggered a worldwide scramble to shield critical infrastructure. Indian authorities are currently in direct communication with Anthropic’s leadership in the United States to understand the full scope of this breach.
Sitharaman advised the Indian Banks’ Association to establish a real-time intelligence-sharing network to counter these algorithmic threats. This initiative aims to connect financial institutions directly with agencies like CERT-In for rapid response. Historically, India’s banking sector has been a primary target for state-sponsored cyberattacks, making the arrival of such potent AI tools a matter of national economic sovereignty.
Strengthening Digital Vaults
Banks must now engage specialised cybersecurity firms to audit legacy architectures. The Finance Ministry emphasised that the capability of Mythos to outperform human hackers necessitates a shift toward AI-driven security protocols. Experts believe that as these "Zero-day" vulnerabilities become easier to find, the traditional methods of protecting digital wealth require immediate modernization to stay ahead of bad actors.
