Maritime Emergency Leaves Five Dead Off East Java

Rescuers in Indonesia scrambled on Sunday to locate 41 missing passengers after a ferry caught fire off Madura island, leaving at least five people dead. Emergency crews have saved 225 individuals out of the 271 passengers and crew members on board when flames suddenly swept through the vessel. Multiple rescue boats continue scouring the surrounding waters in a race against time.

Voyage Turns Fatal Near Madura Island

Traversing the route from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi, the passenger vessel was passing the northeastern coast of Java when the blaze broke out. Officials have not determined what triggered the inferno. Survivors jumped into the open sea to escape the intense heat before rescue teams pulled them to safety. Disasters of this nature frequently plague Indonesia, an archipelago nation consisting of more than 17,000 islands where water transport serves as a primary transit lifeline. Overcrowding, poor maintenance, and lax enforcement of safety regulations regularly contribute to fatal maritime incidents. Just last year in July 2025, a similar fire aboard the KM Barcelona 5 off North Sulawesi claimed three lives, while a 2021 fire on the KM Karya Indah forced nearly 200 people to leap overboard in the Molucca Sea.
