Tragic End for Devoted Father

Shivcharan Ram Ratan Gupta passed away at a Sonipat shelter home early Tuesday morning around 3:30 am, but his three daughters could only watch his funeral on a mobile screen. None of his children traveled to attend his physical cremation. Local facility staff and nearby community members stepped in to perform the last rites for the former Mumbai textile trader. As nuclear families grow more common across India, incidents of elderly parents passing away alone in care facilities have become a deeply heartbreaking reality.

Remote Final Goodbye

Gupta had resided at a care facility managed by Samaj Kalyan Shiksha Samiti in West Ram Nagar for nearly one-and-a-half years. He initially relocated there with his wife Meena, who sadly passed away earlier. He spent his entire life working hard to educate his girls, and he felt very proud that two of them grew up to be teachers. However, facility administrator Anand Kumar revealed the daughters knew about his failing health for 20 days. Their regular phone conversations had completely stopped recently, and they told the staff they lacked the time to travel.

Digital Payments and Final Wishes

His eldest daughter Anita, who works as a teacher in Nepal, sent Rs 5,100 digitally to ensure the staff made proper cremation arrangements. The other two daughters currently reside in Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh. They specifically asked the shelter workers to send them recorded videos of the funeral proceedings. Eventually, the family requested the shelter management to immerse his ashes in the sacred Ganga river, stating they could not return to do it themselves.

Giving the Gift Of Sight

In a very touching final act, medical staff harvested Gupta’s eyes for donation right after he died. This decision fulfilled a special request from his family and offered the beautiful gift of sight to a person in need. The local residents and care workers made sure to honor his memory by managing every detail of his farewell with deep respect.
