Cuttack, May 30: The process of securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Cuttack's iconic Dahibara Aloodum has gathered momentum, with the district administration intensifying efforts to compile historical and documentary evidence in support of the application.
The administration has appealed to residents to submit authentic records, written documents and historical references that can help establish the dish's unique identity and strengthen its claim for GI recognition. Officials have stressed that all supporting documents must be evidence-based.
The initiative was launched earlier this year with the procurement of application forms from the GI Registry in Chennai. A consultancy agency was engaged to conduct surveys and prepare the required documentation. The application is proposed to be submitted through the Dahibara Aloodum Association, with the Cuttack district administration and the MSME Department jointly spearheading the process.
The move comes after Cuttack's renowned silver filigree craft, popularly known as Tarakasi, secured GI status. Over the years, Dahibara Aloodum has evolved from a local delicacy into one of Odisha's most celebrated street foods, earning popularity well beyond the state's borders.
Recognising its cultural and culinary significance, residents and food enthusiasts have long demanded GI status for the dish. Responding to the growing demand, the district administration has now formally initiated efforts to obtain the prestigious geographical indication tag for Cuttack's signature food item.
