New Delhi, April 7: Campaigning for the high-stakes assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry concluded on Tuesday, with political leaders making last-minute appeals to voters. The elections for 126 seats in Assam, 140 in Kerala, and 30 in Puducherry will take place on Thursday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several other key leaders held rallies in support of their parties’ candidates. In Kerala, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) seeks a third term, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) aims for a change in leadership. The BJP, gaining ground in Kerala, is also optimistic about its prospects.
In Assam, a six-party Congress alliance is challenging the ruling BJP-led NDA, which seeks a third term. Tensions escalated in recent days with allegations from Congress against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife, prompting police actions. Meanwhile, in Puducherry, the contest is between the ruling NDA and the Congress-DMK alliance, with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) adding a new dimension to the race.
Amit Shah, addressing rallies in Assam, expressed confidence in a BJP victory and reiterated the party's commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code. Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan defended the LDF's record, claiming no anti-incumbency sentiment in the state. Priyanka Gandhi, on the other hand, criticized the LDF government, labeling it corrupt and endorsing the UDF as a better alternative.
Campaigning also continues for the Tamil Nadu and West Bengal assembly elections, with votes to be counted on May 4.
