Guwahati, July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to review the flood situation in Assam, a day after the former Assam chief minister visited relief camps in the flood-affected regions to assess ongoing assistance and rehabilitation measures.

Sonowal, who represents Assam in the Union Cabinet and previously served as the state's Chief Minister, shared on X that the Prime Minister called to enquire about the prevailing flood conditions and the relief efforts underway.

The call marked the second consecutive day that Modi reviewed the flood crisis in the northeastern state. On Saturday, he had spoken to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, assuring him of the Centre's full support in tackling the flood situation and providing all necessary assistance to the state government.

The Prime Minister has been closely monitoring the evolving flood situation as rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations continue across the affected districts of Assam.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said the death toll from this year's floods has risen to 66 even as the flood situation showed signs of improvement across the state with water levels receding in several affected districts. More than 6.54 lakh people continue to be affected across six districts, while the state has launched a Rs 12 crore relief campaign to provide clothing to flood-hit people.
