Angul, July 3: Odisha Vigilance has secured the conviction of a former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police in a bribery case. The convicted officer has been sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment and fined by the Special Vigilance Court.
On Friday, the Special Vigilance Judge, Angul, convicted Chittaranjan Sahoo, who had served as ASI at Industrial Police Station, Nisha, Angul, and was later posted at the SDPO Office, Palalahada, Angul.
He had been charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
According to the Vigilance investigation, Sahoo had demanded and accepted a bribe of ₹15,000 from a complainant in exchange for releasing the complainant's mobile phone. Following the investigation, Odisha Vigilance filed a charge sheet, leading to his prosecution and eventual conviction.
The Special Court sentenced Sahoo to four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine. Following the judgment, he was taken into judicial custody and sent to jail to serve his sentence.
Odisha Vigilance has also announced that it will move the competent authority to initiate proceedings for Sahoo's dismissal from government service in accordance with the rules governing the conviction of public servants in corruption cases.
