Puri, April 7: In a remarkable display of courage and cultural spirit, a 30-month-old child artist, Prateek Muduli, captivated thousands during the Sahi Jatra festivities in Puri. Despite his tender age and not yet beginning formal education, the toddler delivered a striking performance, upholding the pride of his sahi and jaga.
Dressed in a Naga costume weighing nearly 15 kilograms, Prateek remained awake throughout the night and performed from start to finish of the procession. Accompanied by traditional war music, his expressions, gestures, and confident stance left spectators in awe. He was seen skillfully wielding a sword and firing a mock gun, drawing huge appreciation from the crowd. Many locals believe such a performance at such a young age is unprecedented in the history of Sahi Jata.
Belonging to the Balisaahi Hinjal Jaga, Prateek covered nearly 7 kilometers during the procession, passing through key areas including Harachandi Sahi, Manikarnika Sahi, Baseli Sahi, Lokanath Road, and the periphery of the Shree Mandir.
At times, he rode on his father’s shoulders, while at others, he stepped into the crowd, performing with intensity and confidence. His unique blend of innocence and fierce expressions drew admiration, with many enthusiasts lifting him onto their shoulders.
Prateek’s father, Dillip Kumar Muduli, said the performance reflects their family tradition and devotion. “We belong to a family of performers. My grandfather, father, and other family members have been part of Sahi Jatra. Prateek developed interest after watching his elder brother perform last year. Though we were hesitant due to his age, his determination led us to arrange everything within four days with the blessings of Lord Jagannath and Lord Nrusingha,” he said.
Prateek performed from 10 pm to 6 am, entertaining the audience throughout the night and emerging as one of the biggest attractions of this year’s Sahi Jatra.
