Phulbani, Mar 31: The much-awaited thirteen-day Danda Yatra is set to commence in Kandhamal district from April 1 and will continue till Mesha Sankranti. The festival, observed with strict ritualistic regulations from Mina Sankranti to Mesha Sankranti, draws devotees and local villagers alike, all eager to witness the traditional Danda dance.
Preparations are underway across all Danda grounds in the district. During the festival, the devoted Danduas observe a rigorous ritual of pure fasting. Devotees perform special prayers and rituals dedicated to Dakshinakali and Brahmagni, invoking blessings for a prosperous year.
The festival is marked by vibrant festivities, with rhythmic sounds of the Pata Dhol, Pani Dhol, Ghantha, Mahuri, and Hulahuli resonating throughout the region. As per tradition, Danduas visit the homes of well-wishers in the morning to seek alms before performing the Danda dance. The day is divided into sessions: the afternoon features Dhuli Danda and Pani Danda, while the night is dedicated to Jhuṇa Danda or Agni Danda.
In the evenings, the performers enact episodes from the Danda folklore and narrate stories of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati through dance and song. The Danda dance ensemble includes roles such as Chadhei–Chadeiani, Saura–Sauruni, Yogi–Yogiani, and Veenakar–Karuwani, captivating the audience with their intricate performances.
The Danduas, dressed in saffron-colored attire, carry out processions across villages, including Baliguda town and Puralpalli, adding grandeur to the festival and keeping the traditional spirit of the Danda Yatra alive.
