International Day of Forests 2026: Highlighting role of forests in environmental & economic sustainability

Observed annually on March 21, the International Day of Forests serves as a global reminder of the critical importance of forests in sustaining life on Earth. The day promotes awareness and encourages conservation efforts for all types of forests, recognising their vital role in maintaining biodiversity, ecological balance, and human survival.

Forests, from ancient woodlands to expansive tropical reserves, are home to countless species of animals and birds, providing the foundation for the planet’s biodiversity. Beyond their environmental significance, forests are also economically indispensable, generating employment, reducing poverty, and supporting food systems for billions worldwide.

History of the Day

The roots of the International Day of Forests trace back to November 1971, when member states at the 16th session of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) voted to establish an annual ‘World Forestry Day’ on March 21. In the years that followed, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) organised six “Forest Days” in collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change between 2007 and 2012. Building on these initiatives, the United Nations General Assembly formally established March 21 as the International Day of Forests.

Global Significance and Economic Impact

Forests play a pivotal role in regulating climate, conserving water, protecting soil, and reducing the risk of natural disasters. They also support agriculture, energy, industry, and urban systems, indirectly safeguarding global economies and ensuring sustainability for present and future generations. Despite their critical contribution, forests are often undervalued in national economic and industrial decision-making, with investments to prevent deforestation falling far short of what is required.

Theme 2026: ‘Forests and Economies’

This year, the theme for the International Day of Forests is “Forests and Economies”. It underscores the importance of forests not only for environmental health but also as a cornerstone of global economic prosperity. The observance calls for greater action to maximise the benefits of forests while ensuring their long-term sustainability.
