Hockey India Issues Show-Cause Notice to Hockey Association of Odisha

National sports body demands accountability from state hockey administrators

Hockey India has formally directed a severe show-cause notice to the Hockey Association of Odisha, initiating a potential downgrade from a Permanent to an Associate Member. This decisive regulatory move occurred during an Executive Committee meeting on October 6. National officials stepped in after an Electoral Officer produced an adverse report, which successfully stalled the scheduled state hockey elections on October 3.

National sporting officials outlined eight specific areas of concern regarding the management of 30 district units across the state. District Magistrates and Sub-Collectors currently hold key local leadership positions, such as President and Secretary, entirely on an ex officio basis instead of through fair democratic elections. Odisha boasts a rich history of promoting and hosting world-class sporting events, making proper local governance highly critical for nurturing grassroots talent.

Investigators found that none of the 30 regional bodies could produce basic election notices, meeting minutes, or official voting results to validate their leadership structure. Without these crucial documents, authorities could not finalise a legitimate electoral roll for the organisation. State administrators now have exactly two weeks to submit valid proof of fair elections and proper statutory authorizations. Ignoring this strict deadline will force the Affiliation Committee and General Body to proceed with the membership downgrade.

Reacting to this national regulatory directive, Hockey Odisha General Secretary Pratap Satpathy expressed strong support for the governing body's actions. He publicly urged the Chief Minister to step in immediately and help restore transparent, democratic administration to the state sporting association. Clean governance remains essential for the future growth of athletes across the region.
