iPhone users can now make contactless payments in India
Starting today, users across India can process payments directly through their iPhones and smartwatches following the official rollout of a highly anticipated digital wallet. This launch arrives more than ten years after the initial United States debut. Currently, compatibility remains exclusive to Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank, though expansion to other financial institutions is planned for the near future.
Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, stated that this service gives users an easy, secure, and private method to check out without needing extra apps, PINs, or OTPs. Authentication happens entirely on the device using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. This offline capability offers a smoother experience compared to traditional net banking. Digital transactions in India have grown exponentially over recent years, primarily driven by robust domestic infrastructure. Bringing an alternative international platform provides consumers with more choices for their daily spending.
Steps to configure your wallet
Setting up the payment system takes just a few minutes. Users must open their built-in Wallet app, tap the plus sign, and follow the on-screen prompts to add an eligible card. Axis Bank customers can also link their cards directly through the bank's mobile application. Once configured, shoppers only need to double-click their side or home button, authenticate with biometrics, and hold their device near any supported reader. Online checkout works similarly, eliminating the need to type out card details manually. Customers will still earn their usual credit card reward points on every transaction, ensuring they retain existing financial benefits while enjoying faster checkout speeds.
Device requirements and supported merchants
Compatibility requires an iPhone XR or newer model running iOS 18. Smartwatch owners need a Series 6 or newer model updated to watchOS 11. Initial retail partners accepting these contactless payments include Zomato, Blinkit, Croma, Chaayos, Reliance brands, and Tata 1mg, alongside official company stores. Globally, this financial network spans more than 90 countries with over 11,000 banking partners.
