Hirakud dam opens four more gates amid rising inflows

Sambalpur, Sep 5: Amid rising water levels in the Mahanadi River system, authorities at the Hirakud Dam opened four additional sluice gates on Thursday, increasing the total number of open gates to 20 for water discharge.

According to the latest data, the water level at the reservoir has reached 626.56 feet. The dam is currently receiving 2,93,512 cusecs of inflow, while 2,64,129 cusecs are being released downstream. The surge in inflow is attributed to floodwaters from the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River.

In an official statement, dam authorities confirmed that two more gates were opened at 4 PM on Thursday to manage the rising water levels. The gates are being opened in a phased and controlled manner to ensure regulated discharge and prevent any abrupt flooding downstream.

Previously, 16 gates were in operation. With the latest openings, the total number of gates releasing water has reached 20. Officials have also indicated that more gates may be opened if inflows continue to increase.

The frequent opening of gates has raised concerns of potential flooding in low-lying areas downstream, especially in regions close to the riverbed of the Mahanadi. Residents in these vulnerable areas have grown increasingly anxious over the safety of their lives and property.

Authorities have urged people living along the riverbanks to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories as the situation evolves.
