Balasore, July 20: The Odisha Crime Branch has launched a comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of 20-year-old Soumyashree Bisi, a student at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, who died from severe burn injuries after a self-immolation attempt on campus.

Vinaytosh Mishra, Director General of the Odisha Crime Branch, assured on Sunday that all angles are being thoroughly investigated.

"As of now, several witnesses have been identified," stated DG Mishra to the media in Balasore.

He revealed that Bisi had submitted a written complaint to college authorities on June 30, alleging harassment. While the institution initiated internal procedures, "no concrete outcome emerged. This could have led to the incident," he noted.

The Crime Branch is actively recording statements from a wide array of individuals, including the victim’s family members, friends, hostel mates, students from other departments, and college faculty.

Mishra confirmed that all potential eyewitness accounts are being verified to establish a factual narrative.

"Evidence has been collected from the spot, and several CCTV footages from inside and around the campus have been retrieved," Mishra added.

These footages are currently undergoing scientific analysis and will be sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) for expert examination.

The top official also highlighted discrepancies between statements made on social media and those recorded officially.

"Many are making different claims online compared to their official statements. This is being closely investigated," Mishra said.

He emphasized that the analysis of digital and forensic evidence will be crucial in reaching a fair conclusion.

The Crime Branch team will remain stationed in Balasore for several more days.

"Only after we receive the forensic reports and assess eyewitness statements will we form a final opinion," Mishra assured.

He reiterated his commitment to a transparent investigation, stating, "no innocent person will be wrongly implicated. This is a sensitive matter, and our investigation will be fair and transparent."

He also clarified that Bisi had not filed any police complaint prior to the incident.

The case has sent shockwaves across the state. Soumyashree Bisi, a second-year integrated BA B.Ed. student, allegedly poured petrol on herself and attempted self-immolation in front of the principal’s chamber on July 12. She had accused Head of Department Samir Kumar Sahu of sexual harassment.

Bisi sustained over 95% burn injuries and was initially admitted to Balasore District Headquarter Hospital before being transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. She tragically passed away on July 15 while undergoing treatment in the ICU. The incident has ignited widespread outrage, with student groups and civil society organizations demanding a high-level probe and strict action against those responsible.
