Malkangiri, Sept 2: Incessant rainfall has once again led to flooding in Malkangiri district, submerging the Kangurukonda Bridge under 4 to 5 feet of water and severing connectivity between Malkangiri and Kalimela on National Highway 326. As a result, hundreds of vehicles, including buses returning from Hyderabad to various districts in Odisha, are stranded on both sides of the bridge.
Southern Odisha continues to reel under heavy rainfall, further worsening the situation. The overflowing river has also impacted traffic on National Highway 327, completely halting vehicular movement on the vital route that links Odisha with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana via Kalimela.
In a related development, landslides triggered by the rain have blocked several key routes in the region. Soil erosion near the Nalco mining area has disrupted access to two villages- Talarangapani and Upararangapani- leaving residents cut off.
Landslides have also hit the Kukudasill–Rangapani road, making it impassable for four-wheelers. While two-wheelers are still able to navigate the damaged road, movement remains hazardous.
The situation in neighboring Koraput district is similarly grim. In Tentulipadar Panchayat under Narayanpatna block, hill-cut roads leading to remote villages are proving increasingly vulnerable. Even light rainfall has been triggering soil erosion and frequent landslides, making travel both difficult and dangerous for residents.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, but continued rainfall poses serious challenges to relief and restoration efforts.
