Gulveer Singh Wins Historic Silver In Men's 10000m At Glasgow CWG 2026

Gulveer Singh secures India's first Commonwealth 10,000m track medal

Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh created history on Tuesday night in Glasgow by securing silver in the men's 10,000m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

He finished the race with a time of 27:49.78. This achievement is special because it marks India's first-ever podium finish in this demanding track event. Running in rainy conditions, he stayed patient with the leading pack. At the bell for the final lap, he was in third place. He then produced a brilliant sprint to pass one runner, finishing just behind Australia's Ky Robinson. David Mullarkey from the Isle of Man took the bronze. Historically, East African nations like Kenya and Uganda have dominated long-distance track events at these games, making this breakthrough exceptional for Indian athletics.

Harjinder Kaur Shines In Weightlifting

Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur also enjoyed a fantastic day, winning silver in the women's 69kg category with a career-best performance. She lifted a total of 227kg, which included 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk. During the event, she broke the Commonwealth Games snatch record twice. Canada's Charlotte Simoneau won gold by lifting 235kg. This marks Harjinder's second consecutive medal after her bronze at Birmingham 2022.

Current Medal Tally Reaches Twelve

These recent performances have pushed India's overall medal count at the Glasgow Games to 12. The country currently holds two gold, seven silver, and three bronze medals. Top honours belong to Mirabai Chanu for weightlifting and Sharmila Dhankar for the women's shot put F57. Other athletes contributing silver include Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Sarvesh Kushare in the men's high jump, and Valluri Ajaya Babu. Bronze medals from Bindyarani Devi, Shilpa K. Shyla in shot put F57, and para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar complete this successful run so far.
