New Delhi, Apr 18: On auspicious occasion of Good Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday remembered the courage and sacrifices of Jesus Christ and said that this day inspires us to cherish kindness, compassion and always be large-hearted.

Taking to his official ‘X’ handle, PM Modi wrote, "On Good Friday, we remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This day inspires us to cherish kindness, compassion and always be large-hearted. May the spirit of peace and togetherness always prevail."

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wished a blessed Good Friday and urged people to embrace the values of humanity, kindness, and peace in our shared existence.

"Wishing you a blessed Good Friday. May the essence of compassion, forgiveness, sacrifice, and empathy continue to inspire our actions. Let us embrace the values of humanity, kindness, and peace in our shared existence," wrote Kharge on ‘X’.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also greeted people and said, "May this Good Friday fill every heart with compassion, kindness, and love, and bring peace to all."

Notably, Good Friday holds profound significance for Christians around the world, including in India. It is observed with deep reverence on the fifth day of Holy Week—beginning with Palm Sunday and culminating in Easter, typically falling in March or April.

The day is marked with special solemnity in several Indian regions, especially in the north-eastern states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as in Goa, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Kerala, which has the largest Christian population in the country.

Across different parts of India, Good Friday is known by various local names that reflect its somber meaning. In Malayalam, it is called Duhkhavelli, meaning "Sad Friday," while in Tamil, it is referred to as Periya Velli (The Big Friday) or Punita Velli (Holy Friday).
