UTTARKASHI (UTTARAKHAND), August 5: A devastating cloudburst triggered massive flash floods in the Himalayan village of Dharali, en route to Gangotri, on Tuesday, leaving at least four people dead and dozens trapped under debris.
The sudden deluge swept through homes, trees, and vehicles, burying nearly half the village under a torrent of mud, rubble, and water. Officials reported that 60–70 people were trapped as rescue teams battled difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions in the ecologically sensitive region.
Dharali, a key halt for pilgrims heading to the Gangotri temple and known for its cluster of hotels, restaurants, and homestays, bore the brunt of the calamity. Emergency operations are underway to assess the full extent of the damage and locate those still missing.
