Berhampur, September 19: Five children sustained serious burn injuries after a fire broke out from a generator during a Ganesh idol immersion procession in Purushottampur town of Odisha’s Ganjam district.
The injured children have been identified as 4-year-old Itishree Nayak, 11-year-old Suhani Nayak, 8-year-old Bhumi Nayak, 7-year-old Rahari Nayak and 5-year-old Bikash Nayak, all residents of Sitarampur Agraharam Sahi.
According to reports, a generator had been placed on a tractor during the immersion procession. A petrol can was kept near the generator, while the children were sitting nearby and watching the procession.
The generator reportedly became extremely hot, causing the petrol container to catch fire suddenly. The flames engulfed the area, leaving the five children sitting nearby with burn injuries.
Following the incident, the injured children were initially rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. As their condition was reported to be serious, they were later shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for further treatment.
Purushottampur Tehsildar visited the hospital following the incident and reviewed the arrangements being made for the treatment of the injured children.
