Puri, May 30: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration has reportedly seized a quantity of excess Mahaprasad prepared at the Shree Jagannath Temple after allegations surfaced that the offering exceeded the prescribed limit during the Sakala Dhupa ritual.
According to reports, a larger quantity of Mahaprasad, popularly known as Abhada, was prepared and offered than what is officially permitted under the temple's traditional norms. Following the allegations, temple authorities intervened and confiscated the excess Mahaprasad. Sources said the seized food was later sent to a local Balashram instead of being handed back to the concerned Mahasuar servitors who had prepared it.
As per the temple's Swattalipi, the quantity of Abhada to be offered during the Sakala Dhupa ritual is clearly specified. However, it was alleged that these long-standing guidelines were violated, prompting action from the temple administration.
The seized Mahaprasad reportedly included rice, khichdi, kanika, and dalma. Temple officials are said to have arranged for the food to be distributed through the Balashram after it was confiscated.
The incident has sparked discussion among devotees and servitors regarding strict adherence to centuries-old temple traditions and ritual practices at the 12th-century shrine. Similar instances of excess Mahaprasad being seized for alleged violations of temple norms have been reported in the past.
However, no official reaction has yet been received from either the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration or the Mahasuar Nijog regarding the matter.
