New Delhi, July 31. Ten days after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice-President, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced that it has completed the process of compiling the Electoral College for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election.
In a statement, the Commission said it is constitutionally mandated to prepare and maintain an updated list of Electoral College members, comprising elected members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, with their latest contact details.
“The Electoral College list for the Vice-Presidential Election, 2025, has been finalized. The names are listed in continuous serial order, alphabetically arranged by the State or Union Territory to which the members belong. This list will be made available for purchase at a dedicated counter at the Election Commission of India after the formal notification, which is expected shortly,” the statement read.
Dhankhar, who was elected as Vice-President in 2022, stepped down from office on July 21, citing health reasons. His resignation came as a surprise to many, especially since his tenure was due to continue until August 2027. Just hours after chairing a session in the Rajya Sabha, he visited Rashtrapati Bhawan to submit his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.
The resignation has triggered political speculation, especially in light of reports suggesting that the government was caught off guard by Dhankhar's move to acknowledge an Opposition-backed impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma. At the time, the BJP was reportedly preparing to introduce its motion in the Lok Sabha.
So far, the only official response from the government has been a brief post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X (formerly Twitter) dated July 22. “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” the post read.
A senior lawyer by profession, Dhankhar had previously served as the Governor of West Bengal before being elected as Vice-President.
