Egypt advances to World Cup knockouts after dramatic tie
Egypt secured a historic spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage following a thrilling 1-1 draw against Iran in Seattle. This milestone marks the first time the African nation has ever progressed beyond the group stage of the global tournament.
Mahmoud Sabre put the Pharaohs ahead early by tapping in a rebounded shot from Mohamed Salah. Iran fought back fiercely, but Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir became the hero of the match. Shobeir stopped a crucial early penalty from Mehdi Taremi and made multiple spectacular saves to keep his side ahead. Iran eventually equalized when Ramin Rezaeian scored from a difficult angle, earning him the player of the match award.
North African football has seen a massive surge in competitive quality over the last decade, and this result cements Egypt's growing status on the world stage. Iran thought they had clinched a late victory in stoppage time, but a video assistant referee (VAR) review disallowed the goal for offside.
Egypt finished Group G unbeaten and now sets up a Round of 32 clash against Australia. Iran can still qualify as one of the top third-placed teams.
