East Coast Railway steps up preparedness for Cyclone Arnab, prioritises safety measures

Bhubaneswar, October 27: East Coast Railway (ECoR) has stepped up its preparedness to deal with the potential impact of Cyclone ‘Arnab’, which is likely to affect Odisha and Andhra Pradesh between October 27 and 29, 2026. Five districts of Odisha — Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri — are expected to be affected, with vulnerable railway sections primarily falling under Rayagada Division.

As part of its precautionary measures, ECoR has activated a Disaster Management Cell at Rail Sadan in Bhubaneswar. Round-the-clock War Rooms have also been established at divisional headquarters to closely monitor the situation and coordinate emergency response measures.

Enhanced patrolling has been undertaken in vulnerable sections, with additional patrolmen and watchmen deployed at sensitive locations. Officers have been assigned to supervise critical railway stretches and ensure an immediate response to any emergency arising from the cyclone.

To facilitate swift restoration of railway services in the event of disruptions, monsoon reserve trains, diesel locomotives, tower wagons, heavy machinery, engineering equipment and essential restoration materials have been positioned at strategic locations. Accident Relief Trains, medical teams, ambulances and first-aid facilities are also being kept ready to respond to emergencies.

East Coast Railway is maintaining continuous coordination with the Meteorological Department and the Government of Odisha to track the cyclone’s movement and assess its potential impact on railway operations.

Station officials have been directed to keep passengers updated on changes in train services through public address systems and other available communication channels. All necessary precautions are being taken to ensure passenger safety, protect railway infrastructure and minimise disruptions to train operations.

Train Services to Be Regulated as Required

In view of the anticipated adverse weather conditions, train services will be regulated as a precautionary measure. Further operational decisions, including additional restrictions or changes to train schedules, will be taken as necessary based on prevailing weather conditions and safety assessments.

East Coast Railway is closely monitoring the evolving situation and has directed all concerned departments and divisions to remain on high alert and maintain full readiness to handle any eventuality.

These coordinated measures are aimed at safeguarding passengers and railway employees, protecting railway assets and ensuring the earliest possible restoration of normal train services once the cyclone subsides and conditions are deemed safe.
