Bhubaneswar, Jan 10: On the occasion of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, Dr. Rekha Chaturvedi, a distinguished author and educator, launched her book titled ‘Fiji Mein Bhartiyon Ka Itihas Tatha Unka Jeevan (1879–1947)’.
The book sheds light on the hardships and lives of Indian workers who migrated from India between 1879 and 1947.
Dr. Chaturvedi is the niece of the late Pandit Banarasi Das Chaturvedi, a prominent leader in the Indian diaspora, who worked for the welfare of overseas Indians. The book presents the struggles of Indian migrant laborers in Fiji. The story also detailed their difficult lives under colonial British rule.
These workers, often referred to as "coolies," were subjected to severe exploitation and harsh conditions, not only in Fiji but also in countries like South Africa, Mauritius, Trinidad, and Guyana.
She emphasized that the launch of the book during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas highlights the importance of recognizing the contributions of Indian migrants.
The history of these workers and their legacy is a crucial part of Indian and world history.
The book seeks to preserve these stories for future generations. It also emphasizes the need to honor their contributions and keep their memories alive.
This publication by the ‘Sasta Sahitya Mandal’ brings to light the social and historical significance of these workers, who, despite being subjected to inhumane treatment, played a key role in shaping the societies.
