New Delhi, May 21: The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested notorious serial killer Dr. Devendra Sharma, infamously known as 'Doctor Death', from an ashram in Dausa, Rajasthan.
Sharma, a convicted murderer and Ayurvedic practitioner, has been linked to more than 50 killings over two decades, primarily targeting taxi and truck drivers and disposing of their bodies in crocodile-infested rivers.
DCP Aditya Gautam confirmed, “Dr. Devendra Sharma has been involved in around 26–27 murder cases. He has already been convicted in 6–7 of them, receiving life imprisonment and even a death sentence in one case.”
A resident of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, Sharma graduated with a degree in Ayurvedic medicine in 1984 and operated a clinic in Rajasthan for over a decade. His descent into crime began in the mid-1990s following a financial loss of ₹11 lakh in a gas dealership scam. He later launched a fake gas agency and, between 1998 and 2004, became a key figure in a massive illegal kidney transplant racket, reportedly arranging over 125 transplants for hefty commissions.
During this period, Sharma and his gang began abducting and murdering taxi drivers, stealing their vehicles to sell in the grey market. The victims’ bodies were dumped in remote areas, often in rivers and ponds, to avoid detection.
“He and his gang preyed on taxi drivers by hiring them, luring them to deserted locations, murdering them, and selling their vehicles,” DCP Gautam said.
Sharma was arrested in 2004 for his involvement in both the kidney racket and multiple murders. He was convicted of killing 21 drivers and received life sentences in seven separate cases across Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana. In one Gurugram case, he was handed the death penalty.
His family cut ties with him in 2004 after his crimes came to light. Despite his convictions, Sharma repeatedly escaped custody. In 2020, he absconded during a 20-day parole and remained missing for seven months. He again failed to return after a two-month parole in June 2023.
After his recent arrest in Dausa, Sharma has been handed back to jail authorities.
