Odisha Death Toll in Tamil Nadu Ammonia Gas Leak Rises to 13

Bhubaneswar, June 28: The death toll of Odisha workers in the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing factory in Tamil Nadu has risen to 13 after tribal woman Budhubari Nayak died during treatment on Sunday.

Budhubari Nayak, from the Juang tribal community in Angul district, was among several workers exposed to toxic ammonia fumes after a gas leak on June 23 at a shrimp processing unit.

Police have detained four people, including a labour broker and a contractor, to investigate possible violations of labour recruitment and workplace safety laws. Survivors alleged that labour brokers recruited poor tribal workers, including women and minors, with promises of steady jobs.

Following the tragedy, the Odisha government evacuated 58 migrant workers from Tamil Nadu. The incident has also raised concerns over alleged labour trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable tribal communities, with activists and families demanding stricter action against illegal recruitment networks.
