Bengaluru, May 30: Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday formally invited Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar to form the next government in the state. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held on June 3 at 4:05 PM at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru.
The invitation came shortly after Shivakumar submitted his claim to form the government following his unanimous election as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
In an official communication issued by Raj Bhavan, Governor Gehlot invited Shivakumar and his Council of Ministers to take the oath of office. The Governor, in his letter, acknowledged Shivakumar’s claim and confirmed the date and venue for the oath-taking ceremony.
Earlier in the day, the Congress Legislature Party meeting held at Vidhana Soudha unanimously elected Shivakumar as its new leader. Outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposed Shivakumar’s name, which was seconded by senior Congress leader Dr. G. Parameshwar. The resolution was adopted without opposition.
Following the meeting, AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal announced that Shivakumar had been chosen as the CLP leader and would assume office as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Siddaramaiah had stepped down from the post of Chief Minister on May 28, stating that his resignation was voluntary and in line with the guidance of the Congress high command. His resignation came after the Congress government completed three years in office.
The Congress leadership is now engaged in consultations regarding the composition of the new Council of Ministers ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
