Odisha teen cricketer overcomes disabilities to chase national glory

Nineteen-year-old Sibun Nanda from Berhampur is making waves in domestic cricket, refusing to let his inability to speak or hear limit his ambitions. Representing the Kataka Panthers in the Bharat Masala Odisha T20 League - CM Trophy, this right-arm fast bowler and batter has his eyes set on the Ranji Trophy. Having already played two matches for the India Deaf Cricket team, he now targets a spot in the senior national squad.

Overcoming challenges on field

Communication barriers do not hinder his performance. He relies entirely on hand signals, gestures, and eye contact with teammates. He explains that these methods foster strong mutual understanding during tense match situations. He feels no significant difficulty while competing, proving that sport operates on its own universal wavelength.

Growing up in Radha Krishna Billa Street with a father who works as a priest and astrologer, his cricketing roots trace back to Khalikote College Ground. For three consecutive seasons, he has featured in the Odisha U19 Team for BCCI domestic tournaments like the Cooch Behar and Vinoo Mankad trophies. Odisha has consistently produced resilient athletes, but this young all-rounder brings a unique story of defying physical limitations on the state's sporting stage.

Drawing inspiration from Legends

Drawing direct inspiration from his idols M.S. Dhoni and Hardik Pandya, the all-rounder remains completely focused on fitness and daily practice. He expressed immense pride in wearing the national jersey twice but views those appearances as merely the starting line. He wants his on-field performances to make his family and supporters proud, chasing his ultimate goal of playing for the senior India team with quiet determination.
