Cyclone ‘Arnab’ threat: 132 people evacuated in Odisha’s Koraput as heavy rain batters Pottangi

Koraput, Oct 28: Concern is mounting over the potential impact of Cyclone ‘Arnab’ in Odisha, with Pottangi block in Koraput district witnessing continuous rainfall, cloudy skies and light winds. In view of the possible threat, the district administration has directed local officials to remain on high alert and take all necessary precautionary measures.

Following the instructions of the Koraput district administration, the Pottangi block administration has formed a special team to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency response measures. Officials have been deployed across all 14 gram panchayats of the block and are keeping a close watch on developments throughout the night.

As part of the preparedness measures, shelters have been arranged at four locations to accommodate people affected by the adverse weather. According to available information, a total of 132 people have been safely evacuated and provided shelter.

Of them, 86 people have taken refuge at the Danduguda shelter, 25 at Talagolur, one at Pukali and 20 at Amphabali. The administration has reportedly ensured that essential facilities are available for those staying at the shelters.

Pottangi has recorded 151.8 mm of rainfall amid persistent downpours, while light winds continue to prevail in the area. Heavy rain and strong gusts have also caused trees to fall at several locations, blocking roads and disrupting traffic.

Local administration officials and fire service personnel responded promptly, clearing fallen trees and restoring normal vehicular movement. Fire service teams remain on standby to carry out rescue operations, remove road obstructions and respond to any emergency arising from the adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall has reportedly damaged several houses, with some mud houses being washed away or suffering structural damage. The situation has prompted authorities to maintain heightened vigilance, particularly in vulnerable areas.

Officials have been instructed to closely monitor the condition of people staying in relief shelters and immediately report any changes in the situation or the need for further evacuations. They have also been directed to provide timely updates to ensure a coordinated response.

With the threat of the potential cyclone and heavy rainfall looming over the region, the administration continues to monitor the situation in Pottangi and has stepped up precautionary measures to minimise risks and ensure public safety.
